Wreck Information : Ocean Monarch caught fire in the Irish Sea 24th August 1848. A fire was discovered on board when a sailor searching for stowaways left a burning candle unattended. Soon after the Ocean Monarch with 396 passengers, left Liverpool. The fire was uncontrollable and a number of small steamers and pleasure boats had to come to the aid of the passengers.
